Artist's Comments

Trying to keep productive. Quick sketch to try and get back into sketching.

From this really cool stock photo.

As always, I'm a fan of advanced critique. And advanced compliments.

That's too complete for 30 minutes. Some of the depth is lost, I think because you are trying to make a complete picture in very little time? Try to stick the action gesture of the pose first, as well as the proportions of the body before you move on to the details (such as the clothing, although, with the fabric in the original picture, there is a gestural quality to the way the fabric twists that reinforces the action of the body). Also, while there seems to be a secondary lighsource coming from the left in the picture, try to keep the main (strongest) light source (originating from the right) more dominant. It will help with depth.

Hope that helps!

Practicing is definitely harder than preaching.

I think I'm trying to learn proportions and overall body shapes by focusing on all the details, so you're right that I should spend some time doing quick gestures too. They always come out wrong though, dammit. Thanks for the advice though man, you always have great stuff to say.

I decided it's impossible to not sound a little pretentious while commenting on other people's art, so now I just make sure I'm at least constructive too.
"Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a...middle."

I agree with Glenn; stick to the the action pose first, then detail. I think if you would do that more often, you'll get better at proportions a lot faster :)

I agree. I definitely need to do some more gesture based sketches. Do you think the proportions on this are off though? And if so, which ones? Tell me now!

The proportions are fine for the most part, but if you look at the right leg in the picture, and then your drawing, it's a bit off. Try with the leg first :)
